Job Summary

Responsibilities
  • Performs work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards. 
  • Diagnoses vehicle problems based on customer complaints and inspection.
  • Communicates with parts department to obtain needed parts. 
  • Saves, tags, and delivers parts of the job to the Parts Department if under warranty or if requested by the customer. 
  • Examines assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended. 
  • Communicates with Service Advisor or Shop Foreman immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time. 
  • Communicates with customer, accompanied by the Shop Foreman, on specific complaints or details of repairs as needed. 
  • Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order. 
  • Road tests vehicles when required if holds a Commercial Drivers License and certified as a company driver. 
  • Consistently maintains training and education as assigned by management.
  • Participates in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, schools, and events. 
  • Keeps abreast of manufacturer technical updates. 
  • Reports shop tool/equipment defects or malfunctions to supervisor. 
  • Ensures that customers' vehicles are kept clean. Notifies service advisor immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle. 
  • Keeps shop area neat and clean. This includes general areas, work bays, and yard. 
  • Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals.
  • Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition as they were received. 
  • Understands, keeps abreast of, and complies with federal, state, and local regulations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know, etc.

Qualifications

What You'll Do

About the Role

The Shipfitter III is a highly skilled trades position responsible for repairing, modifying, installing, and dismantling shipboard hulls, bulkheads, and decks. This role involves fabricating complex fixtures and jigs, working in confined spaces or overhead structures, and performing physically demanding tasks. The position requires strict adherence to safety, quality standards, and technical procedures, with frequent travel and overtime. The Shipfitter III also mentors junior craftsmen and ensures work meets MILSPEC and SUBSAFE requirements.


What You’ll Do

  • Repair, modify, install, and dismantle shipboard hulls, bulkheads, and decks.
  • Fabricate and install components as directed by technical work documents.
  • Set up, align, and operate various hand and portable tools, including plasma cutting machines and oxy/fuel torches.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and MILSPEC/SUBSAFE standards.
  • Mentor and guide junior craftsmen in trade practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Must-Have Skills and Experience

  • Hands-on shipfitting experience with the ability to work independently.
  • Welding qualifications (GTAW/SMAW).
  • Knowledge of shipboard plate systems (hull, deck, bulkhead) and installation/repair practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • SUBSAFE qualification and Deep Submergence Systems (SOC MCD A, B, C) experience.
  • Ability to obtain Secret/Confidential clearance and government base access.
  • Experience in alignment, fabrication, and use of trade-specific hand and portable tools.


Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience designing and fabricating complex fixtures and jigs.
  • Prior mentoring or leadership of junior craftsmen.
  • Military or civilian experience in a shipyard or repair department.
