Description
Go to end ⇓The Senior O&M; Technician operates and maintains gas/oil-fueled electric generating units including turbines, generators, boilers, transformers, pumps, switchyard systems, and associated auxiliary equipment. Responsible for startup, shutdown, and steady-state operations while ensuring plant reliability, efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance. Provides leadership in directing operators, support staff, and contractors, and supports environmental, safety, and NERC compliance programs.
Plant Operations:
- Operate gas turbines and auxiliary systems during startup, shutdown, and normal operations without direct supervision.
- Monitor plant systems, alarms, and operating conditions to ensure safe and efficient performance.
- Conduct inspection rounds of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems.
- Respond appropriately to abnormal or emergency conditions.
- Communicate and coordinate with market operations and dispatch groups.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronic, digital control, instrumentation, communication, and computer network systems.
- Perform predictive and preventive maintenance (PM) activities.
- Inspect, repair, rebuild, align, adjust, and clean rotating equipment, valves, actuators, piping, breakers, and control systems.
- Conduct interlock and circuit breaker trip checks.
- Use schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings to diagnose and repair systems.
- Operate, maintain, and repair medium- and low-voltage breakers and associated equipment.
- Utilize electrical and instrumentation testing equipment for calibration and troubleshooting.
Project & Administrative Support:
- Conduct tests, surveys, and layout work for plant projects.
- Assist with new construction drawings and revisions to plant equipment and facilities.
- Use work management systems to create/update work orders, PMs, material requests, and reports.
- Prepare written reports on plant conditions and operations.
- Assist in invoice review and site inventory management.
Leadership & Compliance
- Direct and coordinate the work of plant personnel and contractors.
- Conduct job briefings and enforce company procedures.
- Support and help manage site safety, environmental, and NERC compliance programs.
- Participate in audits and regulatory reporting activities.
- Mentor and train employees; promote a strong safety culture.
- Maintain SPCC, FRP, emergency response, CPR, and incipient firefighting readiness.
- Associate Degree in Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Power Plant Technologies, or Industrial Engineering Technology.
- 3-5 years of power plant operations & maintenance experience (combustion turbine experience preferred).
- Successful completion of POSS and MASS testing.
- Valid State Driver's License and ability to obtain required certifications.
- Ability to pass physical abilities assessment (climbing, heights, lifting up to 50 lbs).
- Strong knowledge of power plant startup, operation, and shutdown procedures.
- Working knowledge of boilers, turbines, generators, transformers, pumps, exciters, switchyard systems, and auxiliaries.
- Ability to analyze, interpret, calibrate, and adjust plant instrumentation and controls.
- Proficiency reading and interpreting electrical schematics and technical prints.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to perform in a fast-paced, multitasking industrial environment.
- Commitment to environmental stewardship, OSHA compliance, and safe work practices.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting (up to 50 lbs).
- Ability to work outdoors in hot and cold conditions.
- Close visual acuity for inspections and computer-based monitoring.
- Availability for overtime and on-call rotation.
- Willingness to assist at other facilities as needed.
