Construction Companies Look to Experienced Veterans in Addressing Skilled Labor Shortages

The Construction Industry is a great place for Veterans to find rewarding careers. Company founder Keller Webster of KWA Construction is an Army vet. His son and company president, Brian Webster, said military personnel develop intangible skills—integrity, high ethical standards, adaptability, resourcefulness—all of which are assets to themselves and the contractors that seek to hire them. They also arrive with tangible skills like physical strength, knowledge in operating machinery, project management, and extensive experience with budgets and deadlines.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the construction industry will need to add 1.6 million jobs over the next four years. However, the employers in the construction trades have been hampered by a shortage of skilled labor. More construction firms, hiring agencies and non-profit organizations are recruiting military vets to help fill the gaps.

Orion consultant Dom Serra said, “Each year, nearly 200,000 military veterans exit the service looking for their next career. Construction firms can benefit tremendously from the work ethic, operational leadership, and time management skills these veterans have gained from years spent planning, executing, and managing projects/missions in the military.”

Wayfair Vice President Presents to Junior Military Officers

It was an honor to have Wayfair’s Vice President of Government and Industry Relations, Michael O’Hanlon, present to our Junior Military Officers at a recent Distinguished Candidate Conference, addressing Wayfair’s military hiring initiative and his own transition from the military to the private sector.

Wayfair, Inc. is an American e-commerce company that sells home goods, furnishings, and decor. Headquartered in Boston, Wayfair has offices and warehouses throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

O'Hanlon currently spearheads Wayfair’s government relations and industry strategy, managing collaborations with legislators, policy makers, and regulators. Prior to joining Wayfair, O’Hanlon spent more than 11 years as an investment banker and six years as a submarine officer in the U.S. Navy. He earned an M.B.A. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Virginia.

Wayfair values and honors the contributions of military veterans and seeks to provide a place for them to share their skills and insights with their colleagues. Orion Team Members Making a Difference in the Triangle

Hundreds of low-income homeowners in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina are living in unacceptable conditions without the means to move or improve their environments. Rebuilding Together of the Triangle (RTT) is on a mission to provide these families with a safe, healthy home.

Recently, Orion Team Members had the pleasure of helping Rebuilding Together of the Triangle with their latest project. Our group installed safety handrails in both the rear and front of the home for US Army Veteran James Collins.

James and his wife were wonderful hosts to our team and James shared a very unique story about the start of his military career. Unfortunately, he originally missed the first letter informing him that he had been drafted. By the time he received the second letter, he had to prepare to deploy to Korea in just one day!

Orion is proud to assist Rebuilding Together of the Triangle as it helps give families a chance for greater independence and peace of mind while improving the condition of their homes.

According to Your Peers

"Over the years on active duty, I have had peers leave service and use military recruiting firms. During my personal search, largely driven by regional constraints, I learned about the Orion team out of the San Diego office through phone and in-person interactions. I also got a lot of great information from the Orion website. Of the 4 placement companies and multiple regional sub-offices of those companies I had talked with, the San Diego Orion team was by far the most impressive, most transparent, and hardest working.

Orion seemed to accept the fact that the company will do better, and the candidates would be happier if they focused more on the quality of the fit rather than just making a placement." - Keir Stahlhut, Project Management Development

"Orion exceeded my needs by providing opportunities with potential employers to find the best fit. Orion has done a great job of laying the groundwork for veterans and employers. Thanks Orion for helping me land a job!" - Mark Zellner, Manufacturing Supervisor

"Both of my recruiters were great! They coached me, guided me and helped secure my new career. I was contacted by my recruiter with an interview opportunity. I completed an initial interview, panel interview and a final interview spaced around a week apart with an offer letter about a week after my final interview. " - Harold Meza, Assistant Construction Manager
