PODCAST: Working with Military Recruiting Firms

Jim Bergren, a former Air Force Officer, joined our podcast From The Battlefield to the Boardroom to discuss his own transition from the military, working with Orion, and the importance of attending a Hiring Conference. If you are a transitioning military member wondering how Orion can help you find a civilian career, Jim offers insights into his own experience that can prove helpful to your own job search.

“Transitioning from the military can be scary,” Jim admitted. However, when faced with the decision whether or not to stay in the military, Jim ultimately chose to enter a civilian career path, citing that he wanted to be more in control of his own career. “I wanted to be able to take control of where I was heading, being able to live where I wanted to live,” he explained. 

In addition, Jim realized the benefits that entering a civilian career could have on his own job progression. “In the corporate world, the opportunities for promotion are a lot better in terms of your schedule,” he continued. For all transitioning military, the soft skills that veterans possess - leadership, teamwork, discipline, and drive, are valued in companies, which puts veterans in a good place to find a career outside of the military. 

When the time came to actively pursue a civilian career, Jim looked to social media. “I updated my LinkedIn profile to say that I was a transitioning military officer, and a Recruiter from Orion saw that and reached out,” he explained. Jim was confident in Orion’s abilities to help him pursue a career after the military. “I immediately could tell the difference between Orion and some of the other recruiting firms I worked with,” he added. “I knew that with Orion, I was going to be in good hands.” What stood out the most to Jim was how Orion handled the process, especially hiring conferences.

An Orion Hiring Conference offers a unique experience for transitioning military members looking for a civilian career. “I first sat down with a Recruiter, who coached me and other candidates on how to interview,” Jim stated. By hearing company presentations firsthand, attendees are able to gain a clearer picture of the company culture, history, and positions for which they are interviewing. “[This] helped me to focus on what I really wanted to do after the military,” Jim added. 

Orion’s Hiring Conferences are “not just another job fair,” Jim explained. “The value is amazing for personal improvement, and seeing what the opportunities are [in the civilian world].” Working with Orion was “a breath of fresh air,” Jim said. “I’ve learned a lot through the whole process on how to get a job.”

Orion’s First AE Virtual Open House

Orion Talent hosted our first-ever AE Virtual Open House, a webinar focused on learning more about a career as an Account Executive. During the webinar, attendees learned more about the Account Executive role at Orion and were given the opportunity to be potentially selected for a follow-up interview for one of our open Account Executive positions.

Hosted by Katie Mychalowych, Orion Talent Internal Talent Lead, the webinar covered the background of Orion Talent, a detailed overview of the Account Executive position, the hiring process timeline, and more. 

The webinar also featured presentations by Orion Account Executive Andy Pero and Regional Sales Managers DJ Holder, Gino Marchetti, and Chris Casanave, who all spoke to their personal experiences as an Account Executive and being promoted into a leadership role within the company.

JDog Discovery Days - The Beginning of Owning Your Own Business

JDog Brands is the largest Veteran owned franchise system, offering business ownership opportunities exclusively to Veterans and Military family members. What to Expect Before a JDog Discovery Day

After filling out the Franchise Inquiry Form, you have two calls with members of the JDog Franchise Development team:

  1. A Qualification Call to verify your information 

  2. An Introductory Call with the VP of Franchise Development to see if JDog is the right fit! This is meant for you to understand the franchise opportunity, learn more about JDog’s background, review pricing, investments, and the business model, as well as express your motivation to start and plan a timeframe for opening your franchise location.

What to Expect During a JDog Discovery Day

  • Meet the Founders: You will meet the founders, Jerry and Tracy Flanagan, to discuss where JDog started, how the business is today, and their vision for growth. 

  • Meet the Support Team: The support team will walk you through an overview and give insight on the advertising, marketing, corporate services/national accounts, operations, training at JDog University, introduction to the types of vehicles, leasing and business financing alternatives. 

  • Meet JDogs-In-Training: During a complimentary dinner, you have an opportunity to meet with JDogs that are currently going through the training process to become official owners! 

  • Review FDD and Build a Territory: The VP of Franchise Development explains the Franchise Disclosure Document (F.D.D.) in more detail and the President of JDog reviews and creates your potential territory with you.

What to Expect After a JDog Discovery Day

Once you digest all of the information you learned at Discovery, you are encouraged to contact JDog’s VP of Franchise Development for any follow up questions. Upon making the decision to own a JDog franchise, the Franchise Development team will help you kick off the financing process, assist in securing available vehicles, review and sign the Franchise Agreement (F.A.), and attend JDog University for training!

VA Refinance Loan FAQ with Mutual of Omaha Mortgage

VA REFINANCE LOAN FAQ

What is a VA streamline refinance?
The VA streamline refinance loan is also known as the VA IRRRL. The VA streamline refinance is often a simple loan process because the borrowers are refinancing from one VA mortgage loan to another VA loan. This loan is often also referred to as VA-to-VA Loan. A VA streamline refinance is not available to homeowners who do not currently have a VA mortgage loan. The VA streamline refinance loan does not require that the borrowers occupy the home which is currently financed with a VA mortgage product.

What is a VA IRRRL?
The VA IRRRL loan is also known as the VA refinance or the VA streamline refinance. The acronym IRRL stands for interest rate refinance reduction loan. The VA IRRRL loan or VA streamline refinance is a special type of refinance loan made available by the VA Loan Guaranty program. The VA IRRRL loan is a fixed-rate refinance loan program. This loan is ideal for homeowners who currently have a VA mortgage loan who are looking to lower their monthly interest rate.

Can you refinance a VA loan?
Yes, if you are currently a homeowner whose property is financed via a VA mortgage loan you can apply for a conventional, FHA or VA refinance. Depending on the rate and terms a borrower is seeking, they have the option to review any type of refinance loan to replace their current VA mortgage loan.

How soon can you refinance a VA loan?
Depending on the level of risk associated with a borrower, most lenders would typically require the homeowner have their current VA mortgage loan for a minimum of 12 months prior to applying for a refinance. Payment history is one of the most crucial factors in determining a borrower's risk level for a VA refinance.

Can I refinance my mortgage with a VA loan?
Yes, if you are actively serving military, honorable discharge, veteran or the surviving spouse of any of the previous who is currently the borrower of a VA home loan you may refinance your property with a VA streamline refinance or VA IRRRL loan. The VA streamline refinance or VA IRRRL loan is only available to homeowners who currently have a VA mortgage loan. VA refinance loan products are not available to civilians or the general public.

Can I refinance a conventional loan to a VA loan?
Yes, a borrower who is eligible for VA benefits can refinance from a conventional loan to a VA loan. Although this is not typical, there is no restriction that prevents this. To be eligible for a VA loan a borrower must be actively serving in the U.S. military, have received an honorable discharge, be a veteran or the surviving spouse. If a borrower who currently has a conventional loan opts to refinance with a VA loan the loan process could take longer than average because different documentation will need to be reviewed that was not previously received and underwritten by a VA approved lender.

When to refinance a VA loan?
The decision to refinance a home should not be taken lightly. It is important for a homeowner to evaluate and determine their financial goals. If a homeowner is seeking the opportunity to lower their monthly interest rate or transition from an adjustable rate mortgage loan to a fixed rate program, then a refinance could be a great opportunity. Speaking with an experienced loan originator can help a borrower review their income, assets, and debt to determine if a refinance is the right decision.

How long does it take to refinance a VA loan?
If a VA borrower uses the VA IRRRL loan or VA streamline refinance, the entire process can be completed in 30 to 45 days. Although the VA streamline refinance or VA IRRRL loan does not require income verification, in order for the VA refinance process to move forward, a borrower must have the following qualifications:

 - VA Loan eligibility of the borrower must have been used on the property intended for refinance
 - Most recent two years of W-2 statements to establish income
 - Ability to document current or previous occupancy of the property
 - Confirmation of currency on mortgage payments or no more than one late payment in the last 12 months
