Construction Companies Look to Experienced Veterans in Addressing Skilled Labor Shortages
The Construction Industry is a great place for Veterans to find rewarding careers. Company founder Keller Webster of KWA Construction is an Army vet. His son and company president, Brian Webster, said military personnel develop intangible skills—integrity, high ethical standards, adaptability, resourcefulness—all of which are assets to themselves and the contractors that seek to hire them. They also arrive with tangible skills like physical strength, knowledge in operating machinery, project management, and extensive experience with budgets and deadlines.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provides many courses and training opportunities that translate well to the civilian world, Bodies added.“For example, construction management, project management, hazardous materials, and master level courses enhance our leadership skills,” he said.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the construction industry will need to add 1.6 million jobs over the next four years. However, the employers in the construction trades have been hampered by a shortage of skilled labor. More construction firms, hiring agencies and non-profit organizations are recruiting military vets to help fill the gaps.
Orion consultant Dom Serra said, “Each year, nearly 200,000 military veterans exit the service looking for their next career. Construction firms can benefit tremendously from the work ethic, operational leadership, and time management skills these veterans have gained from years spent planning, executing, and managing projects/missions in the military.”

Orion Team Members Making a Difference in the Triangle
Hundreds of low-income homeowners in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina are living in unacceptable conditions without the means to move or improve their environments. Rebuilding Together of the Triangle (RTT) is on a mission to provide these families with a safe, healthy home.
Recently, Orion Team Members had the pleasure of helping Rebuilding Together of the Triangle with their latest project. Our group installed safety handrails in both the rear and front of the home for US Army Veteran James Collins.
James and his wife were wonderful hosts to our team and James shared a very unique story about the start of his military career. Unfortunately, he originally missed the first letter informing him that he had been drafted. By the time he received the second letter, he had to prepare to deploy to Korea in just one day!
Orion is proud to assist Rebuilding Together of the Triangle as it helps give families a chance for greater independence and peace of mind while improving the condition of their homes.

According to Your Peers
"I had initially gone through Orion and thought that I had a job when I first got out. That didn't end up working out and I worked for a manufacturing company for over three years. When I wanted to start looking again, Orion was the only place I went. My recruiter was very considerate and kept good contact. It was awesome to have someone in my corner. He helped me land my current position. I’m extremely grateful for Orion meeting all of my needs." - Joel Hammon, Maintenance Shift Manager
"While in the Navy I attained the rank of Machinists Mate 1st class, but I believe it was my training as an Engineering Laboratory Technician and Radiological Controls Technician that allowed me to get the job I have now through Orion. I attended the Lombard, IL Orion Hiring Conference this year. I had an interview with my current employer and now am a Health Physics Technician. I can’t compare Orion with any competition because I’m uninterested in them. My loyalty lies with Orion! " - James Springer, Health Physics Technician
"My recruiter was very helpful in every step of the way. Orion helped every time I had a question especially since the companies were competing for me. Orion set up a great event where I ended up getting a great position." - Julio Mejia, Service Specialist
