Position Title: MACHINIST

Position Summary: Set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, fit and assemble machined parts into complete units applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, maintainability of materials, and layout techniques.

Accountabilities: Machinist are responsible for producing conforming parts that meet all print dimensions within the said tolerances in the most efficient method. All SOP's and WI's must be followed and a safe, clean organized work area must be maintained.

Authorities: Not applicable.

Duties:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, routing instructions, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining as required by router instructions and good shop practice.
  • Properly select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on machines. Must be able to improvise setups using common tooling such as risers, angle plates, etc.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth or angle of cut or enter commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Must observe machine operation to predict or detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining conditions, and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verify that all machined details are produced in a manner that meets print or router specifications, using precision measuring instruments. Request first piece inspection when producing multiple piece runs.
  • Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings, tooling, or programmed control data.
  • Review the next project's routers, programs, set-up sheets and tool sheets while the current part is running.
  • Fit and assemble parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools and power tools.
  • Verify dimensions and alignment of assembly, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
  • Enter correct data into data collection system (IDC) to ensure accurate labor reporting.
  • Understand and properly operate the "Available Documents" program.
  • Monitor and maintain proper cleanliness of machine and work area on a daily basis.
  • May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance, working under the direction of maintenance personnel.
  • May develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
  • May confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Job Qualification Requirements:

Educational Experience – A minimum of four years of trade school, vocational education, or apprenticeship.

Experience – Required to have specialized experience with particular materials, products, precision level, machining process or size, type, or trade name of machine. A minimum of five years work experience.

Physical Demands – The employee is required to:

  • stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor
  • exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
  • exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or
  • exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Required Experience:

  • Hands-on machining experience. The ideal candidate started their career as a CNC Machinist and then grew into an engineering role.
  • Previous experience with Mazak and Matsuura milling and mill-turn machines is ideal. Previous experience in the manufacture of blades and vanes is highly desirable.
Required Skills:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • Proficient knowledge and application of precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, and indicators.

SUMMARY

Removal and installation of hull treatment and non-metallic coatings on United States Navy nuclear-powered submarines. Position requires a willingness to learn, dependability, and the ability to think critically.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure work is done safely and meets quality standards.

Ability to perform carpentry-type duties to include use of manual tools, power tools, and building of containments.

Read and interpret documents as necessary, such as operating and maintenance manuals, safety rules and regulations, procedure manuals, etc.

May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of hull treatment.

Maintain a clean work environment where coatings work is being performed.

Demonstrate comprehension of complex shapes and the ability to understand symmetrical gaps both parallel and perpendicular to the ships surface shape.

Mixing of different types of solvent and adhesive materials.

Use of troweling tools and adhesives, and work with equipment specific to hull treatment installations

Understanding fairness and flushness with regards to surface preparation.

Follow all company rules and policies.

Provide a great level of attention to detail and focus on the given task.

May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the Superintendent.

Must be willing to comply with clean shaven standards needed to wear half/full face respirator.

Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation to obtain access into a shipyard environment.

  • Proficient knowledge and application of precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators, and CMM experience
  • Knowledge of reading drawings and specifications with an understanding of geometric tolerance and dimensions
  • Knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts and other accessories used on various machines
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions
  • Must be able to communicate in English (both oral and written) as it relates to the job
  • Must be adaptable to a changing work environment
  • Must possess math skills to include but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry and algebra for the purpose of calculating material fabrication.
  • Willing to run multiple machines independently or in a team environment.

Position: CNC Lathe Machinist

Pay Range: $22.00 – $32.00 per hour (based on experience) 

Job Type: Full-time

Overview: We’re seeking a skilled CNC Lathe Machinist to set up and operate Haas Machines. The ideal candidate is self-sufficient, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently. Strong print-reading skills and proficiency with measuring equipment are essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform complete machine setups with minimal supervision
  • Install tools and jaws, bore jaws as needed
  • Inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, height stands, and other precision instruments
  • Monitor and adjust machine offsets to maintain quality
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
Schedule:
  • Monday to Friday
  • Day shift (8 – 10-hour shifts)
  • Additional overtime available

The Goals and Challenges of this Role:
  • Weld various parts in different materials
  • Conduct dimensional inspections of parts and check for quality requirements.
  • Understand and interpret blue prints and technical drawings.
  • Works with Operations and Weld Engineering to execute various types of projects.
  • Grinding, sanding, and cutting (oxy fuel and hand plasma)
  • Adhere to lean manufacturing initiatives, quality requirements, and safety programs.
  • General welding and shop duties as needed
What You Should Bring to this Role:
  • Experience in welding of Carbon, Stainless, or High Alloy Steels
  • Experience in FCAW and GMAW Spray Transfer.
  • Experience welding thick to thin structural members
  • Strong overall mechanical aptitude.
  • HS diploma or equivalent
