Veteran Spotlight: Anthony Great

We’re proud to profile Anthony Great, a former U.S. Army Armor Officer who is now a Production Supervisor with Tempur Sealy.  Anthony worked with Orion Talent a few years ago to help find a career when he transitioned from the Army, and attended a Distinguished Candidate Conference in Atlanta. After a year in his position, Anthony was looking for a career change, and reached out to Orion to help him find a new position.

“The Orion team did an outstanding job preparing me for my interview with Tempur Sealy,” Anthony said. “I did mock interviews, and I was given information about the company. I was also informed of how to get further information about the company.” One of the most important tips Anthony received from the Orion Recruiting team was to research not only the company, but the hiring manager.

“By researching the hiring manager, I discovered that he had served as a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer prior to being commissioned,” Anthony explained. “With his military background, I knew that he understood the challenges I faced.”

According to Anthony, his experience serving in the Army and working with people from very diverse backgrounds has been key to his success so far at Tempur Sealy. “I have been able to build a winning team and make tough decisions in stressful circumstances. The military has prepared me to make an immediate impact in my role,” Anthony explained.

In his short time at Tempur Sealy, Anthony has also had the opportunity to apply for a higher role as Night Shift Production Manager. He counts his leadership skills that he acquired in service as key to his success in the civilian workforce.

Anthony’s advice to transitioning military leaders is to prepare for the transition. “Conduct your transition like a military operation,” he advised. “Plan, conduct reconnaissance, establish contingency plans, rehearse, prep the battlefield with shaping operations, and execute the critical tasks efficiently and professionally,” he stated.

If you are transitioning soon and looking for a civilian career, join Anthony and the thousands of others like him who have found rewarding careers through Orion Talent. Begin your career search with Orion and register today.

Veteran Franchise Opportunities: Why Veterans Make Great Entrepreneurs

Orion has partnered with JDog to provide exclusive franchise opportunities for honorably discharged Veterans and Military family members. The company is seeking motivated entrepreneurs to own and operate a franchise, backed by JDog’s proven business model and all of the support you need to be successful. JDog franchise opportunities include JDog Junk Removal & Hauling and JDog Carpet Cleaning.

JDog was founded by a Veteran with the goal of helping Veterans experience business ownership by running their own franchise, employing fellow Veterans, ultimately reducing Veteran unemployment to less than 1%. As a JDog franchise owner, you will join the extended Military family the company has created, and continue to serve by serving your community.

Why do Veterans make great entrepreneurs? JDog’s blog post, “Why We Choose Our Heroes,” highlights the qualities and skills that Military candidates possess that make them ideal for franchise ownership, including:

Ingrained Ethos: Respect, Integrity, and Trust are expected in the Military. As you deal with customers and employees, these values will serve you very well.

Leadership: Business owners are leaders. Whatever their position in the Military, service members have experience with a variety of leaders who show different styles of leadership.

Discipline: One of the first skills gained in the Military is discipline. Discipline is also beneficial for business owners because it is essential for smooth operations and making success more attainable.

Commitment to Serving: As an entrepreneur, you are serving customers. Whether selling goods or offering services, you act for the benefit of a customer. While Military members fulfill their duties, they are acting with the benefit of our country in mind.

Support System: During their time in the Military, Veterans had a tight knit brotherhood and sisterhood they could depend on. Particularly when a Veteran joins a franchise, a support system is provided to encourage success and create comradery. When Veterans join JDog Brands, they join our brotherhood and sisterhood of others who have served their country.

Military Officers Connect with Civilian Careers at Orion’s Distinguished Candidate Conferences

Orion Talent hosts a number of Distinguished Candidate Conferences each year across the country, featuring Engineering, Sales, Project Management, Leadership Development, and Operations Management positions available nationwide.

Distinguished candidates include graduates of Military Service Academies or Top Universities, those with an advanced education, and those that have consistently ranked above their peers in Officer Evaluations.

You can view a complete guide to our DCCs in this video featuring Orion Regional Recruiting Manager Mike Wood:

The feedback from candidates attending our DCCs is consistent every year, with veterans saying it is by far the best way to find their next career.

In 2019, nearly 200 Military Officers found their civilian careers through our Distinguished Candidate Conferences, with companies including Corning, Honeywell, Ingersoll Rand, Siemens, and many others. See below for our upcoming DCC schedule:

Orion only holds a few DCCs each year, so opportunities to attend are limited. If you would like to be considered for one of our special special hiring events, please complete a form above or contact Chris Hurst at churst@oriontalent.com.
