Job Responsibilities:
The Outside Machinists are responsible for all shipboard mechanical work that takes place in Electric Boat's Groton shipyard. Tasks include: on-hull machining, component installation, support testing of mechanical components, lay-out of weldments, shafting, propulsion plant
installations, pumps, valving, weapons and communication systems. Diligent

Overview
The Shipyard Test Organization is the premier trade made up of a team of world class testers who have the knowledge and skill to be the last in line delivering the most capable warships to the U.S. Navy. In STO, we are a learning organization that operates daily on our foundational pillars of proper planning, integrity, and ownership to complete operational testing with the highest level of formality. 
 
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  1. Perform electrical testing of all Shipboard, Steam and Electric Plant, Auxiliary and Weapons systems.
  2. Complete and maintain the required training to perform electrical operational testing of all Steam and Electric Plant systems; Hull Mechanical and Auxiliary systems; and Weapons systems which may include going on sea trials.
  3. Complete and maintain the required training to perform watch standing duties to include: operate ship’s electrical systems; roving watches required for ship safety, safety dispatch or to monitor electrical systems required as part of the construction which may include weekend work.
  4. Complete and maintain the required training to perform the duties of a safety technician which requires making systems safe for trade work utilizing Electric Boat’s Lock out/Tag out procedures.
  5. Ability to follow written procedures and comply with requirements.
  6. Exhibit high moral character and integrity required to certify NAVSEA test requirements.
  7. Exhibit the ability to read and understand various system and test diagrams/drawings required for all electrical system testing.
  8. Work onboard submarines under construction during all phases of construction in all types of weather.
  9. Work requires heavy lifting, pulling and climbing (ladders) and enter in tight/confined spaces for extended periods of time.
  10. Be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  11. Perform various electrical testing tasks using various meters to perform continuity checks of installed cables and equipment. Perform alignments of ship systems electronic systems. Assist in trouble shooting when required.
  12. Perform other duties assigned by their supervisor.
  13. Complete and maintain the required training to use radiological dosimetry to work within radiological controlled areas when required.
  14. Complete and maintain the required training to work on energized equipment. Individual must understand and comply with Division Safety Manual and technical manual operating instructions. 
Pay: $28.70 - $41.14/hr

Qualifications Required:
  • High School diploma or GED or 2+ years technical experience
  • Must be available for any shift
  • Prior formal training or job experience in electrical trades and/or testing
Preferred:
  • Prior US Naval submarine system experience or prior testing experience with shipyard systems
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Related military training, electrical training from Vocational, Technical or Community College
  • Experience with and knowledge of Lock out/Tag out procedures
Skills:

Overview

X-Ray Welders are Skilled Structural Welders that can fabricate a weld without defects to undergo a radiographic X-ray inspection.

The Function: This position encompasses welding on Sub safe/Hull integrity joints according to weld procedures and quality standards.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Weld in all welding positions and on various joint designs
  • Gouging of full penetration welds
  • Responsibility for welding with high quality, speed, and efficiency
  • Expectation that final will meet internal policy standards and UT / RT acceptance criteria

Weld Engineer Manager

The Role:

The welding engineer supports productions needs in all aspects of welding process engineering, while developing skills and qualifications to become the company’s SME (Subject Matter Expert). Working closely with other disciplines to project manage complex jobs through to successful completion.

Key Requirements:

  • Read and interpret part drawings & specifications, understanding dimensional tolerances, GD&T symbols NDT, weld & finish symbols.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply complex specifications.
  • Create instructions and process sheets.
  • Prescribe process sequence and details for travelers.
  • Manage welding staff.
  • Work with Production Planning to move jobs through the floor and meet OTD goals.
  • Maintain Level 1 control to material, filler material, gases, and processes.
  • Understand and control requirements for heat input, heat treatment pre-heat, inter pass heat control and post weld heat treatment requirements.
  • Create training plans for new welder personnel and apprentices.
  • Provide estimation with tooling costs, expected cycle times, set up times and third-party inspection requirements.
  • Create, submit and qualify PQR’s (procedure qualification Records) and WPS’s (Weld procedure specification)
  • Prescribe the best practice for handling materials as they flow through the manufacturing process.
  • Recommend safe working requirements (OSHA compliance) for all welding, prepping and staging of parts.
  • Review, Request & Follow-through with certifications from NDT houses.
  • Communicate with third party Testing houses, apply corrective actions to failed parts.
  • Drive in-house process and quality improvements.
  • Design jigs and fixtures when necessary.
  • Define in-house brazing processes and create a training plan.
  • Project manage complex jobs complex jobs through the shop by collaborating with all resources. Prepare Gantt charts and activity checklists to keep the company on track.
  • Gain a solid understanding of S9074-AR-GIB-010/278, T9074-AD-GIB-010/1688, S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248, T9074-AS-GIB-010/271, 0900-LP-001-7000
  • Prescribe the required PM (preventive maintenance) for all welding equipment and part handling equipment.

Key Goals

  • Gain a full working knowledge of our current customer and product requirements.
  • Validate and specify process steps, set up and cycle times for cost understanding.
  • Project manage assigned jobs, clearly communicate deliverables to the LMG team and to the customer.
  • Prescribe how LMG will operate in a safe, clean and organized manner daily.
  • Set up and monitor training programs for welders and any future Prep Operators.
  • Support production at daily Gemba meetings.
  • Certify for NDT level II inspection.
