Meet Laura Schmiegel, SVP, Strategic Partnerships

Laura Schmiegel joins Orion Talent from Booz Allen Hamilton where she served as Head of Military and Veteran Affairs, leading all aspects of the firm's military partnership strategy and advising the firm's military recruiting, diversity and government relations teams. Laura was a founding member and Chairman of the Board at Blue Star Families, then created and directed the military spouse program at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Hiring Our Heroes. Her writing has been published in the Washington Post and The Hill.

In 2021, Laura was awarded the Hiring Our Heroes Colonel Michael Endres Leadership Award for Individual Excellence, for an individual who has gone above and beyond to make a difference in employment opportunities for veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses. Laura leverages her distinguished experience to bolster Orion Talent's commitment to our military DNA by facilitating government, veteran, and channel partnerships, including DoD SkillBridge, DoL apprenticeships, and other veteran resource groups training and upskilling programs.

How upskilling your workforce benefits your organization?

HireSkills offers candidates training in the specific needs of your industry through our proprietary upskilling programs. Upskilling enables companies to expand access to valuable military talent while upskilling them with the specific traits necessary to best perform their job. This allows a company to gain a competitive edge and stay ahead of the growing skills gap.

What does upskilling mean?

Upskilling is the process of ongoing learning and development that increases an intern or employee's abilities. This type of training includes instructor-led training, on-the-job training or online training.

What other programs can we take advantage of to upskill our candidate pool?

HireSkills works in partnership with many types of government, veteran, and channel partnerships, including Department of Defense SkillBridge and Department of Labor apprenticeships, as well as other veteran resource groups training and upskilling programs.

Can I become a SkillBridge provider on my own?

Yes. To become an Authorized SkillBridge Organization, companies must:

  • Have a clearly defined job training and career development program designed to enhance opportunities for transitioning servicemembers.
  • Commit to a 100% interview rate and a high probability of conversion to full time employment for the servicemember on transition.
  • Have evidence that your industry is in demand and has opportunities for professional advancement beyond initial employment.
  • Commit to developing and supervising your Skillbridge participants throughout the program to ensure a high conversion rate.

If an organization can attest to these requirements, they must then complete a detailed proposal including proposed skills training, schedules and stakeholder engagement plan, and a preliminary questionnaire. On approval by the Department of Defense, the organization is then added to the Authorized Skillbridge Organizations list and can begin recruiting candidates to their program.
