Description
The General Manager of Terminal Services develops and maintains positive customer relations by understanding customer needs, contract terms and conditions, and by implementing and executing plans to address those needs. The GM directs a union workforce in the execution of stevedore activities for port terminal cargo. Safety, Customer Service, Production and Labor Relations are the areas of focus for this position. This position supports an onsite 24 hour, 7 day work week.
Responsibilities:
- Management clerks, chief clerks, and foreman in their work assignments and evaluate the performance of all employees under your direction.
- Participate in the development and Implementation of company safety policies and procedures.
- Actively manage and monitor the safety of your operation, ensuring safety of all employees.
- Identify training opportunities of staff as needed.
- Determine work needs for each shift and assign such work to the workforce.
- Manage and implement daily operational changes to improve efficiency and quality of work.
- Reassign labor to other locations or work assignments based on operational need.
- Manage inventory and ordering process.
- Select and evaluate labor including foreman for your operations.
- Ensure work directives are documented and communicated timely.
- Engage in an interactive process with labor, as necessary, regarding reasonable accommodation of disabilities.
- Participate in the interview process for potential steady employees and make recommendations.
- Adhere to the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and ensure positive labor relations with mechanics and union officials.
- Issue internal warnings and/or employer complaints and as needed.
- Address and manage worker's comp procedures.
- Keeps Director and VP of Operations updated and informed daily of Safety, Customer Service, Production, and Labor Relation activities.
- Completes accurate and timely payroll.
- All other duties and projects assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- B.S. in Marine, Logistics Management, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or equivalent and applicable working experience.
- Minimum 5 years of general supervisory experience in maintenance and repair or union environments preferred.
- Valid driver's license and TWIC
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Must have strong management skills with the ability to work on a team and lead department workforce.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and processes and ability to enforce.
- Must have strong organization skills with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
- Ability to accept constructive criticism.

- Must have good interpersonal skills and be customer relations focused.
- Must have good mathematical skills.
- Requires good technical skills and knowledge of maintenance and repair.
Working Conditions:
- Required to climb and work at heights.
- Able to see and hear fast moving equipment while walking or driving on terminals and in yards.
- Ability to work in an environment with high level of noise.
- Ability to work on rotating shifts, days, nights, holidays, and weekends as needed.
- Requires physical ability to access ships, cranes, the yard and office space.
- The ability to use a computer/keyboard.
- The ability to climb up and down a ladder.
- The ability to work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
- The ability to drive 50%.
- The ability to lift 30 pounds.
