POSITION DETAILS
Perform precision machining of large and complex metal components used in critical aerospace
and defense systems. The machinist may handle oversized workpieces, apply advanced
measurement techniques, troubleshoot processes, and collaborate with engineering and
production teams to ensure mission-critical components are manufactured safely and efficiently.
Principal Activities
- Operate and set up CNC and manual machines including lathes, milling machines, multitasks, and Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs).
- Machine large, complex components to precise tolerances per blueprints and
specifications. - Perform turning, boring, drilling, facing, and milling operations on oversized or irregular
workpieces. - Inspect parts using micrometers, dial bore gages, verniers, and other precision
instruments. - Troubleshoot machining issues and recommend process improvements.
- Handle and position heavy workpieces safely, following rigging and crane procedures
when required. - Maintain machines through routine care, cleaning, and minor adjustments.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to resolve challenges and improve
workflows. - Adhere to safety standards and perform other duties as assigned.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proficient in reading blueprints and interpreting geometric tolerances.
- Experience operating CNC and manual lathes, mills, turret lathes, and Vertical Turning
Lathes (VTLs) preferred. - Demonstrated ability to machine large and heavy components to close tolerances.
- Familiarity with rigging, cranes, and safe handling of oversized workpieces.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with ability to adjust machining parameters for accuracy
and efficiency. - Open to coaching and cross-training across multiple machine types.
- U.S. Citizenship required (per DoD requirements).
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required; technical training or concentration in machining
preferred. - Minimum of 3 years of machining experience, including large-part or precision
machining preferred.
