Position Summary : Mechanical Design Engineer

The Mechanical Engineer will design, develop and test the mechanical engineering aspects of the tracker development. In this position, you will use your experience to solve problems, develop and execute on the design objectives and affect short and long-term business goals and strategy of the team.

This position will require travel to engineering development centers and field/customer/construction sites.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Envision, inspire, and develop an industry leading tracker for solar deployments
Serve as a lead technical engineer to help others learn and contribute while maintaining a positive team atmosphere
All development should follow a strict development process with measurable metrics
Tracker needs to have very high reliability (up time) when it is delivered
Documentation is a big part of the role; each step of the design process should be documented and stored in a central system
Interfacing with key certifying organizations and supporting them with needed technical data is a key part of the role
Interfacing with manufacturing partners and ensuring that the tracker can be productized and produced at scale is vital
Ensure safe practices are used to build prototypes and learn from them
Willing to listen to inputs from the team, and then including the good ones into the product is key for the engineer
Above all, this person should be an engineer at heart, with problem-solving skills that are timely and creative


Educational Qualification & Experience

BS Mechanical Engineering
Must have part, assembly, drawing, configuration management, and PDM experience utilizing SolidWorks and Abaqus
Must have developed and had experience in designing mechanical components of a tracker, assemble, analyze them for wind and snow loads, and perform all the required simulations (FEA)
Must have tolerance stack-up analysis experience
Must have structural analysis experience and applying Build Code knowledge
Solar Industry tracker experience is preferred
Minimum 8 years of development experience from a leading company
A team player with strong interpersonal, influencing and leadership skills
Creative, self-starter and independent
Ability to cope with multiple complex situations and emergent priorities daily
Exceptional communication skills to keep a global distributed engineering team motivated and focused
Experience working in a multinational company is preferred
Location: Austin, TX (Priority) or Possibly San Francisco, CA

Salary:

Junior Level Engineering Candidate: ($70-$90k) -- Directly transitioning JMO with an engineering degree but has not yet applied that degree directly during military career or in private industry Or a recent engineering student transitioning into the workforce after graduation.

In the vast majority of future solar array developments on the utility scale level, developers will utilize the ‘Tracker Arm’ Technology in order to maximize the efficiency of their panels throughout the day. Our client specializes in engineering, developing, and installing these tracker arms at large scale solar arrays all over the world. The company is building a team of world class talent and positioning itself for rapid growth within the market and seeking to gain a foothold on the market on a global scale.

Position Description
As an Application Engineer, you will develop deep expertise in the design, construction, and usage of the company tracker product portfolio. You will work with customers, suppliers, and with internal company organizations to solve field related issues that may arise during construction, commissioning, or operation of the company tracker. You will be responsible for driving continuous improvement of the solar tracker product portfolio enhancing ease of installation, energy production, cost of ownership, and quality. This position requires travel to both suppliers and field construction sites. Responsibilities will include:
• Drive continuous improvement roadmap for solar tracker portfolio
• Resolve customer related issues that may arise during construction, commissioning or operation
• Work with quality team to understand failure mechanisms and drive to root cause
• Responsible for improving product design or manufacturing process to achieve manufacturability by working with supplier and internal cross functional team
• Prepares and coordinates field communications in the form of application notes, change orders, work instructions, etc.
• Set up sub-assembly level BOM, technical drawings and coordinates engineering changes as necessary
• Prepares engineering technical documents for release
• Verify samples according to design requirements
• Provide inputs in improving design, process FMEAs, installation manual
• Performs other tasks assigned by supervisor or department head

Position Details
Location: Austin, TX
Salary:

Travel: Potential for up to 50% travel to solar field locations. Half of the engineers may travel out to client sites 50% of the time and the other half of the engineering department typically remains in Austin and only travels about 15-20% of the time. As the company continues to grow over the next couple of years there could be the occasional opportunity for international travel.
Career Progression: Our client is accumulating talent for accelerated nationwide growth. Right now the team is about 60 people worldwide and by the end of this year they will likely be at 90-100 employees. The company is on track to be a 500-person company and compete on a worldwide scale within the solar sector. Position Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Experience in the design and construction of steel beam structure.
• At least 8 years of mechanical design experience.
• Solar Industry experience preferred.
• Skilled in Solidworks/CAD is a plus.
• Proficient in English – written and oral.
• Experience in steel structure and material properties / failure modes.
• Hands-on construction experience and proficiency in using tools is a strong plus.
• Program management experience is a plus.
• Familiar with electronics and wireless communication protocols a plus.
• Strong problem-solving skills, good organization and program management, and the ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities:

The Senior Sales Engineer performs a wide range of duties including some or all of the following:

Direct responsibility for developing, tracking and managing technical sales projects to support the deployment of FTC technology to global markets.
Manage a pipeline of projects and deliverables in our CRM and consistently deliver high-quality, on-time work product.
Meet with potential customers via phone, email, and in-person to discuss project specifications and partner with sales to articulate the business benefits and technical advantages of FTC products.
Lead the development of project configuration drawings for PV projects from 2MW-1GW.
Responsible for analyzing the existing process environment related to FTC pre-sales activities and leading future automation and design.
Will utilize the primary software tools of the utility-scale solar PV industry to perform advanced PV system optimization and design.
Manage a pipeline of business in our CRM and consistently meet or exceed close ratio’s and other sales performance quotas


Requirements:



BA/BS degree in engineering, technology or related field of study (PE preferred)
4+ years of experience in a sales engineering or technical product support role within the solar industry
Prior experience leading others and their managing their work product
A subject matter expert in the field of utility-scale solar PV tracking systems
A strong presenter and communicator in written responses to emails, customer interactions and guiding customer’s understanding of a new technology
Comfortable in the dynamic atmosphere of a technical organization with a rapidly expanding customer base
Familiarity with the solar industry, key players and value drivers
A self-starter who can operate under limited direction
Demonstrated ability to develop high quality work product
Expert user of MS Excel. Proficient user of Powerpoint, Word
Advanced user of PVsyst, SAM, SunDAT and other PV system design and optimization software platforms
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and staff to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment
Analytical and detail oriented
