Position Description: The company is seeking a self-directed and knowledgeable Environmental Engineer to lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of environmental compliance programs across site operations. In this role, you will ensure adherence to federal, state (particularly NC DEQ), and local environmental regulations while supporting corporate environmental and sustainability goals. You will serve as the site’s subject matter expert on environmental compliance, risk mitigation, permitting, waste management, and ISO 14001 audits.
This role requires strong cross-functional collaboration, project management, and analytical skills, as well as hands-on experience with environmental assessments, reporting, and training.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead environmental compliance audits and partner with departments to improve environmental performance
• Develop and manage environmental training to ensure awareness of applicable regulations and procedures
• Prepare and submit timely and accurate environmental reports (semi-annual/annual)
• Manage projects related to air permitting, wastewater, stormwater, solid and hazardous waste, and sustainability initiatives
• Oversee stormwater discharge, adjust flow as needed to meet compliance
• Administer site waste programs (RCRA, Title V), complete manifests, and manage storage areas
• Respond to accidental on-site chemical releases to minimize environmental impact
• Maintain and update the Environmental Compliance Calendar
• Compile site sustainability metrics and communicate with global sustainability teams
• Support ISO 14001 certification activities and participate in internal/external audits
• Lead environmental aspects of assessments, site investigations, feasibility studies, and corrective action plans
Education & Qualifications:
• B.S. in Environmental Engineering (civil or chemical engineering also acceptable)
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant environmental compliance experience
• Wastewater Operator Physical/Chemical Level 1 or 2 certification preferred
Knowledge, Skills & competencies:
• Strong working knowledge of environmental laws and regulations, including NC DEQ, Title V, RCRA, EPCRA, and HAZWOPER
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and environmental reporting tools
• Skilled in interpreting regulatory guidance and implementing compliant solutions
• Ability to manage confidential data and maintain accurate documentation
• Strong communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills
• Highly organized with strong project management capabilities
• Comfortable in a field and office hybrid environment
