Location: Gary, IN (SE of Chicago along the south side of beautiful Lake Michigan)
Shift: Monday – Friday typically 6am – 4pm and otherwise based on operating need. You will have one day per week scheduled for a 12-hour shift and one day a month scheduled as a 16-hour shift. Any weekend work is very minimal, if any, and this role and shift schedule brings an excellent work-life balance for you, which is also important for you as a leader to implement the best work-life balance into your workforce and the team you will lead.
Supervisory Responsibilities: You will directly supervise a shift team of ~20 maintenance personnel of the 60 total personnel in the Caster Division.
Pay: $75K-$95K starting base salary + paid straight O/T (these are salaried, non-exempt positions) + 10% target bonus (half paid out quarterly, the balance paid annually) + relocation. Total 1st Year $100K-$120K+
Position Description: As a Maintenance Manager will be both challenging and rewarding. Unless you have steel industry manufacturing experience, you must be capable of moving into an environment where you have the least product knowledge and industry experience yet are the responsible leader who must create team cohesion and produce quality results. These positions are about guiding a group of experienced steel workers along the path to high productivity and excellence, while mastering the overall aspects of the steel business at the front-line supervision level. Due to the nature of the business, the facilities operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year.? Therefore, as a key leader this position?may require work during plant shutdown and during any unplanned/unforeseen outages.
As a Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible and accountable for all maintenance activities in your assigned Division (there is a current opening in Caster Maintenance – taking liquid steel that is poured into a machine that comes out a solid slab and sent to the hot mill for processing into coil). These are front-line management role positions in which you will supervise, schedule, direct and motivate Maintenance personnel for production. You will be responsible for overseeing all the maintenance programs associated with all production or maintenance operations. Primarily you will be responsible for applying operations leadership and maintenance principles, troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques to evaluate and make decisions that resolve operational, production, or maintenance conditions and improve reliability. You will supervise, direct, and coordinate efforts of experienced operators, associates, technicians, craftsmen, and project planners to repair and maintain equipment to maximize operating efficiencies and improve reliability, using your leadership to effectively engage teams and promote an environment of respect, communication, and collaboration through two-way communication and encouraging new ideas and different perspectives that drive individual, team, and company success. Key responsibilities include:
• Directly supervise union employees and work closely with vendors and contactors.
• Interpret specifications, blueprints, and job orders to workers and assign duties accordingly.
• Coordinate, organize, and direct activities of crews.
• Assists workers in diagnosing malfunction in machinery and equipment.
• Maintain proper inventories to provide efficient operations & devise and implement cost saving strategies.
• Coordinate production or repairs and maintenance with a teams of mechanical/electrical maintenance staff.
• Use technical knowledge, equipment documentation, safety procedures, and schedules for production or to follow, improve, and develop preventative and routine maintenance programs.
• Develop & implement methods & procedures designed to eliminate problems & improve product quality.
• Perform administrative activities such as scheduling crews, completing reports, conducting safety conversations, etc.
Requirements: At a minimum, candidates must have a high-school diploma or GED; at least 2 years of supervisory experience leading work crews in a manufacturing, industrial, or military environment; and outstanding leadership. For this maintenance leadership role candidates must have mechanical maintenance knowledge and experience on systems like hydraulics, pumps, rotating equipment, rollers, bearing clearances, alignments, greasing, etc., with ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience in managing Maintenance Programs (planned, preventative, and emergency). In this role you will lead multi-craft maintenance crews. Candidates must be able to lead and operate without a structure and procedure, using common sense, problem solving, and a “figure it out” approach to be successful in this role. This is a very industrial, blue-collar environment, so you must have a keen eye for safety and be comfortable “rolling your sleeves up” and credibly leading from the floor. Candidates must pass a pre-employment hair follicle drug test as the company has a zero-tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol for safe steel-making operations.
