Gain A&P Certification with Military Experience – Learn more about FAA Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Certification

The Aviation Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Industry faces a critical shortage of skilled Aviation Mechanics, with a projected need for 47,000 new technicians by 2027. This shortage is further intensified by an aging workforce and high entry barriers for new professionals.

Around 100,000 skilled Active Duty service members have the experience required for FAA certification. However, transitioning into civilian roles is often hindered by the complexities of earning an A&P license. Meeting FAA requirements to become a civilian Aircraft Mechanic can take months to years if steps aren't taken to track and prove qualifications before leaving the military.

We can help you prepare for a career as an FAA-certified Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) before you leave the military, preparing you for a highly technical occupation keeping U.S.-registered aircraft operating safely and efficiently.

Orion Talent Will Help You Obtain Your FAA Certification

Aviation mechanics play an important role in aviation safety, and you have already developed the skills necessary for success while in the military. If you spent time maintaining, troubleshooting, and inspecting military aircraft or engines, you may be able to test for an FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification with your military experience.

Orion's dedicated team of Military Aerospace Recruiters provides essential education and guidance, assisting candidates in documenting their experience, obtaining necessary signatures, and applying for FAA certification while still on Active Duty.

Orion Talent acts as a crucial link, working closely with military Aviation Mechanics transitioning from Active Duty and helping you prepare for and succeed in a civilian role in the aerospace industry.

By the time you leave Active Duty, you'll be ready to complete the testing and examination phase for your Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) License. FAA certification is based on knowledge gained through training and experience and is demonstrated through written, oral, and practical tests.

Here are a few things you should know to help you understand this process:

Existing Training Programs
Take time to get familiar with the FAA Mechanic website. You'll find everything you need to know about Certificates & Records, Aircraft & Technical Information, Forms, Regulations & Policies, Testing, Training, and more.

Workforce Development
In order to take the A&P exam and obtain your certification, you'll need 30 months of practical mechanical experience (not just months in the military). Depending on your specialty, the FAA may grant you credit for your military aviation maintenance experience toward the Airframe and/or Powerplant ratings.

A&P Certified Candidates
You must complete the Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council (JSAMTCC) training program. Your Military Branch of Service will document and file your training and experience records for you.

If you're an Active Duty military member, you should make your application at your local FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO), where an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI) will evaluate your experience.
If you're an Active Duty military member, you should make your application at your local FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO), where an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI) will evaluate your experience. You will need all training and qualification documentation, and a letter from your Executive Officer, Maintenance Officer, or Classification Officer certifying your length of military service, the amount of time you worked in each MOS, NEC, or AFSC, the make and model of aircraft and/or engine on which you acquired the practical experience, and where you obtained the experience.

Once approved, you'll receive two copies of a Form FAA 8610-2 Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application ('tickets'), and you're ready to register for and take your test.
