Position Overview
The Machine Shop Foreman is a working leader responsible for overseeing daily machining operations, guiding machinists, and ensuring production is executed safely, efficiently, and to specification. This role blends technical machining expertise with floor leadership, requiring the ability to interpret complex drawings, plan workflows, troubleshoot issues, and drive performance across the shop.
This individual will operate at a highly independent level, capable of leading production with minimal oversight while maintaining strong communication across teams.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Technical Leadership
- Interpret blueprints, drawings, and tolerances to guide machining operations
- Select appropriate machines (lathes, mills, grinders, etc.) and tooling setups
- Plan job sequences, batch sizes, and workflows for optimal productivity
- Perform hands-on machining, setup, and troubleshooting as needed
- Conduct first-article checks and ensure adherence to specifications
Shop Floor Management
- Supervise, train, and mentor machinists to improve performance and quality
- Communicate priorities, production schedules, and expectations clearly
- Monitor machine performance and recommend process improvements
- Track production output, materials, and job progress
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure all output meets quality standards and tolerances
- Troubleshoot machining issues using a systematic, root-cause approach
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to improve efficiency
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce proper PPE and safe machine operation practices
- Perform routine machine maintenance and ensure equipment reliability
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
Non-Negotiables (Must-Have Requirements)
- 10+ years of machining experience in a production environment
- Strong expertise with manual machining (lathes, mills, grinders)
- Experience working in metal fabrication or heavy industrial environments
- Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints, tolerances, and schematics
- Hands-on experience with precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges)
- Demonstrated leadership experience on the shop floor (training, supervising, or mentoring machinists)
- Ability to plan workflows, setups, and production sequencing independently
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
- Commitment to safety standards and PPE compliance
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

- Machinist trade school or formal technical training
- Multilingual capabilities (helpful for diverse shop environments)
- Experience interfacing with vendors or outsourced machining partners

Compensation & Market Positioning
- Base Salary Range: $75,000 – $100,000
