NC Lathe and Mill Operator 
Reports To: Machine Shop Manager
Classification: Non-Exempt
Required Education and Experience: 
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Desired Education and Experience: Associate’s degree or vocational training in machining, manufacturing technology, or related field preferred. 2-5 years of CNC machining experience with both lathe and mill operations. Strong background in precision measurement and quality control processes. Prior experience with CNC troubleshooting and process improvement preferred.
Position Summary/Objective
  • Responsible for setting up, operating and maintaining CNC machines to produce precision castings according to specifications. This role requires attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to quality and safety. This position requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions to ensure parts are produced to exact specifications. The operator will work with both CNC lathes and mills, ensuring efficient production, accurate measurements, and adherence to company and industry standards.

  • Set up and operate CNC lathes and mills to machine aluminum castings.
  • Perform machine adjustments, offsets, and tool changes as needed.
  • Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges) to verify dimensions.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of machines and work areas.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and make adjustments to maintain efficiency.
  • Document production data, quality checks, and machine logs.
  • Follow all safety procedures and company policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None
Work Environment
  • Work is performed in a manufacturing/machine shop setting with exposure to noise, moving mechanical parts, metal shavings and cutting fluids. 
  • The temperature may vary depending on season and shop ventilation. 
  • PPE such as safety glasses, hearing protection and steel toed shoes is required. 
  • The work pace is steady and may include repetitive tasks and close attention to detail.
  • Employees must remain alert and safety conscious at all times due to the nature of operating heavy and automated equipment. Occasional overtime or shift flexibility may be required to meet production demands.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:
  • Ability to stand, walk and move about the shop floor for extended periods (up to 10-12 hours per shift).
  • Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, and handling of parts and tools.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials and castings weighing up to 50 lbs regularly: assistance with heavier loads available.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity required for handling precision tools and small components.
  • Visual acuity to read blueprints and precision measuring instruments.
  • Hearing ability sufficient to detect machine sounds, alarms, or changes in equipment operation.
  • Tolerance to working in a machine shop environment with moderate noise levels, coolants, and exposure to metal shavings.
