Aluminum Welding Supervisor
About the Role
What You'll Do
- Lead and coordinate daily operations of the aluminum welding department
- Plan and prioritize production schedules to meet deadlines and project demands
- Monitor workflow, staffing levels, and resource allocation to maintain efficiency
- Supervise, train, evaluate, and support aluminum welding staff
- Maintain employee records, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions
- Ensure production goals for cost, quality, and output are met or exceeded
- Coordinate material flow to support continuous production
- Request and manage supplies, tools, and equipment
- Partner with Production Manager on outsourcing needs when required
- Recommend improvements to processes, equipment, and product quality
- Oversee maintenance and proper operation of welding equipment
- Inspect fit-up, tank shells, and completed welds for quality and compliance
- Read and interpret blueprints, weld schedules, and technical drawings
- Collaborate with QA/QC and inspection teams to ensure standards are met
- Enforce safety protocols and proper use of PPE and equipment
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and identify defective materials
- Support hands-on welding, layout, plasma cutting, and fabrication as needed
- Ensure welds meet airtight, watertight, and fuel-tight standards
Must-Have Skills and Experience
- Prior supervisory or lead experience in a welding or fabrication environment
- Strong aluminum welding experience in shipbuilding, marine, or heavy industrial settings
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and technical specifications
- Experience managing production schedules and workforce planning
- Proficiency with welding processes and equipment (MIG, TIG, etc.)
- Strong knowledge of safety standards and industrial best practices
- Experience inspecting weld quality and ensuring compliance with specifications
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment
- Strong communication and team leadership skills
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Shipyard or marine vessel construction experience
- Experience working with automated welding equipment
- Familiarity with QA/QC processes and working with inspection authorities
- Experience with budgeting or cost control in a production environment
- Knowledge of air-arc gouging and advanced fabrication techniques
