Description

As a Control Room Operator, you will operate and monitor main generating units and supporting plant equipment from the control room while coordinating closely with the Shift Supervisor and Operations & Maintenance team. The role includes unit startup, paralleling, shutdown, switching, equipment clearances, emergency response, and support of maintenance activities during outages and relief periods.

This is an experienced plant-operations position. The strongest candidates will bring direct power plant control room experience or highly comparable operating experience in a complex continuous-process environment. The client emphasized proven plant-environment experience, disciplined operating practices, equipment knowledge, safety, and transferable experience with large interconnected mechanical, electrical, and process systems.

Responsibilities

  • Operate plant equipment and switchgear controlled from the control room
  • Start up, parallel, load, monitor, and shut down main power-generation units in accordance with established procedures
  • Place plant equipment and auxiliaries into service and remove them from service as operating conditions require
  • Respond to abnormal and emergency conditions and take appropriate actions to place equipment in a safe condition
  • Write switching orders, perform required switching, and support equipment clearance and tagging activities
  • Monitor operating parameters, alarms, trends, and plant conditions to maintain safe and reliable generation
  • Perform or assist with routine maintenance on equipment under control room responsibility
  • Support maintenance activities during relief weeks, overhauls, major outages, and other planned downtime
  • Maintain strong housekeeping and conduct safety checks for potential hazards
  • Assist in training and orientation of new Control Room Operators, O&M Technicians, and Assistant Plant Operators
  • Temporarily support O&M Technician and/or Shift Supervisor responsibilities when qualified and required
  • Remain available for rotating shifts, overtime, emergency callouts, and operational coverage

Must-Have Skills, Experience, and Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum four years of power plant operator experience, including demonstrated control room operation and related auxiliary systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of power production principles, control room operations, operating procedures, system operating orders, and clearance procedures
  • Ability to start, parallel, operate, and shut down power-generation equipment safely
  • Experience clearing equipment, writing switching orders, and performing necessary switching
  • Strong understanding of emergency operating actions and safe equipment conditions
  • Working knowledge of maintenance functions as they relate to control room and plant operations
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate effectively with operations and maintenance personnel
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, emergency callouts, and outage schedules
  • Ability to meet plant physical and respirator-qualification requirements

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Steam plant, turbine-generator, circulating fluidized bed, coal/refuse-fueled, or comparable thermal generation experience
  • Experience with plant control systems, boilers, turbines, generators, switchgear, pumps, fans, conveyors, and balance-of-plant equipment
  • Previous O&M Technician, senior operator, watch supervisor, Navy engineering, power-generation, or comparable military plant experience
  • Experience training junior operators or supporting plant qualification programs
