Summary

A Controls Specialist (CS) is responsible for installation, commissioning, scheduled and emergency service on products serviced by Fairbanks Morse Defense commensurate with appropriate certification. The CS is required to establish, promote, and maintain excellent rapport with all customers, co-workers, sales representatives, and others as appropriate. The CS is also required to maintain continuous communication with Region Offices, and direct manager.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

ROLE

  • Controls Specialist conducts installation, testing, and troubleshooting services for the controls systems on FMD engine lines
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
  • Ability to diagnose problems and develop solutions for qualified engines
  • Can work independently on qualified engines
  • May occasionally be assigned to shop duties such as general machining, part inspections, assembly, testing, and warehouse.

TECHNICAL

  • Keep current on Engineering Change Orders, Field Service Change Notices and Service Information Letters
  • Document work performed on Service Reports and write Condition Found Reports

SAFETY

  • Operate in a safe manner in accordance with published safety guidelines
  • Wear appropriate PPE as per company guidelines and accordance with job duties
  • Report all work related accidents or injuries immediately to the appropriate personnel
  • Complete annual safety training requirements as outlined on regional safety schedule

ADMINISTRATION

  • Provide accurate and timely reporting according to company guidelines
  • Timecards, expense reports, mileage reports, project closure, et al.
  • Obtain and maintain certifications for this position based on internal Service Progression Requirements
  • Provide estimated time of arrival to the Customer where applicable
  • Maintain company property according to company policies
  • Vehicle, credit cards, PPE, test equipment, laptop, et al.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

  • Provide proper and adequate communication to internal and external customers
  • Complete scheduled maintenance documentation properly and provide to the customer upon completion of each designated assignment

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • Education and Experience Requirements: High School Diploma or GED required; and at least one or more of the following required:
  • Associate Degree in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, or Power Generation Technology with four years' experience in a related field, including two years equivalent industry experience with electrical/motion controls required, or
  • Four years' experience in a related field, including three years equivalent industry experience with electrical/motion controls required

  • Crane Maintenance Technicians will be responsible for maintaining the facility’s Overhead cranes.

Position Summary
Title: Authorized Inspector (Trainee)
Location: Huntsville, AL
Shift: Monday–Friday, standard daytime hours; occasional evenings/weekends; extended hours during annual outages (4–12 weeks).
Compensation: $72,500 base + overtime; paid 4–5 month training program with pay increase upon completion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete 12–14 weeks of ASME/National Board training and certification, including 120 hours of on-the-job training with an experienced Inspector.
  • Conduct inspections of new construction, repairs, alterations, and jurisdictional assessments of boilers and pressure vessels per ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Sections III) and National Board Code, as well as related client codes and standards.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma with equivalent military experience or Bachelor’s in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.
  • 3–5 years’ experience in boiler and/or high-pressure steam and water system maintenance/operation.
  • Minimum 4 years’ mechanical experience with boilers and pressure vessels in nuclear or conventional power plants.
  • Preferred: Navy MM/BT, SRO, Steam PPWO/EOOW, or Navy Nuke EM/ET with at least 3 years qualified SRO experience.
  • Experience with quality assurance inspections of mechanical equipment, water, and steam systems.
  • Familiarity with inspections of mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and HVAC systems.
  • NBIC Boiler Inspector qualification and insurance inspection experience (risk-based) a plus.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, web-based applications, and Lotus Notes.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; must pass background check.
