It’s that time of the year when we are all in the holiday spirit, listening to Christmas music, decorating, buying gifts for the ones we love, eating food galore, gathering with co-workers, friends, and family, and of course wearing ugly holiday sweaters.

It’s no surprise to veterans that they possess leadership skills, mostly learned from their time in the military. A recent study by the Center for Creative Leadership revealed that Army leaders showed a greater proficiency of core leadership qualities than their civilian industry leader counterparts.

According to a recent LinkedIn report, veterans are more likely to be underemployed than their civilian counterparts. While the unemployment rate for veterans is 3.2 percent (and lower than the national average for civilians), veterans still struggle to find a career that matches their qualifications gained in the military.

LinkedIn recently released their Veteran Opportunity Report, which highlights the current state of veteran employment and how challenging it is for veterans to find a career that properly utilizes all of the skills and talents that they received in the military. The report, pulled from LinkedIn data and additional insights, is helpful for both veterans and employers.

Today marks Veterans Day, a federal holiday to commemorate and honor all those who have served in the US military. The holiday coincides with Armistice Day, which is celebrated in other parts of the world to honor the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I, ending hostilities at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Regardless of the type of industry, companies are looking for one major quality when actively hiring - an individual who has a leadership acumen.
