PODCAST: Career Opportunities for Veterans with Lutron

Since 2016, Orion has partnered with Lutron to provide careers for veterans into a variety of Technical, Engineering and Sales roles. Lutron is a leading manufacturer of energy-saving light, shade, and temperature controls for new and existing homes and offices. Lutron light control products range from individual dimmers to total light management systems that control entire building complexes. Some of the larger Lutron light control systems in the US include the 52-story New York Times Building in New York; Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia; and the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.

Robert Small, a former Army Helicopter Pilot and current Technical Sales Representative with Lutron, recently joined Orion’s “From the Battlefield to the Boardroom” podcast to discuss his military background, what attracted him to Lutron, and the many perks of his 2-year career with the company.

When he transitioned out of the military, Robert knew he wanted to find a role in technical sales. While Lutron wasn’t initially on the list of companies he wanted to work for, that quickly changed once he interviewed with them. “What stood out to me was that Lutron treated me like I expected my future company to treat me. I wasn’t just a number to them,” Robert says.

Lutron provides its employees with the resources they need to be successful and the flexibility to learn as they grow. “I really enjoy the autonomy of this position. I’m able to create my schedule and place emphasis on what I feel is important, and Lutron has empowered me to do that. Many of my colleagues have a lot of experience in sales and in this industry, so it’s really helpful,” says Robert. “I can dictate what I do and when I do it. Lutron allows us to go where our clients will have the most fun - whether it’s going to a Dodgers’ game or going bowling - anywhere you can think of. I really enjoy that aspect of the job,” he adds.

Lutron’s commitment to innovation means it places utmost importance on developing employees to their fullest potential. The company offers on-site programs for employees taught by university professors, nationally recognized training consultants, and experienced professionals from Lutron. Lutron also offers a tuition reimbursement program that allows its employees to pursue courses or degree programs which support their career development. “I’m currently pursuing my MBA and it’s something Lutron is very supportive of - both in terms of my time and financially,” Robert says.

PODCAST: Interview with Matthew J. Louis, Author of Mission Transition

Matthew J. Louis is an Army veteran turned speaker, coach and advisor, and was recently a guest on Orion’s “From the Battlefield to the Boardroom” podcast. Matthew (Matt) joined the podcast to discuss the upcoming release of his book,“Mission Transition: Navigating the Opportunities and Obstacles to Your Post-Military Career.

The book provides invaluable resources to help veterans succeed in Corporate America, including foundational ideas, like understanding who you are and who you want to be, exploring strategies to make your resume stand out and to ace the interview, and discussing ways to acclimate to the new culture and pay it forward to other veterans.

Since transitioning out of the military, Matt has had an impressive career trajectory with highly sought-after companies such as Procter and Gamble, General Electric, and Deloitte. Matt currently serves as the veteran Transition Assistance officer for his West Point class and actively serves several other veteran collaboratives around the country. “I view veterans as being one of the most underutilized resources our nation has to offer. The civilian-military gap is as big as it’s ever been,” Matt says when asked why he felt compelled to write Mission Transition. “If we can help close that gap and unleash the talent that we all know exists in the veteran population, it holds the potential to improve all of the organizations that they join, the economy, the nation, and in turn the veterans and their families as well,” he adds.

Mission Transition provides an in-depth look at each step of the transition process and provides actionable tips, exercises, and proven methods to help you make a successful move into a civilian career. Each chapter showcases numerous “Troops in The Trenches” callouts that include quotes and advice from other veterans from all ranks and branches of service.

For more insight on how to succeed in your military to civilian transition, listen to Orion’s From the Battlefield to the Boardroom podcast featuring Matt Louis, and check out his website to find free resources and pre-sale information for his book, Mission Transition.
