Find Your Next Career at an Orion Distinguished Candidate Conference

If you are a Junior Military Officer preparing to exit the military to begin a civilian career and your education, background, and military career distinguishes you from your peers, an Orion Distinguished Candidate Conference is the ideal event to help find your next career.

An Orion Distinguished Candidate Conference is not like a typical job fair. We carefully select candidates for our DCCs that exemplify the best that Orion has to offer. Our distinguished candidates include graduates of military service academies and top universities, those with a Master’s degree or other advanced education, and those who have been consistently ranked above their peers in officer evaluations.

At these premier events, you'll have the chance to interview with our client companies for positions across the country within Operations, Medical and Technical Sales, Consulting, Engineering, Project Management, Program Management and Logistics. We will tailor an interview schedule to accommodate your individual aptitudes and desires, and provide you with an outstanding opportunity to meet and interview with an exceptional line-up of companies across a wide range of industries.

These events are the largest that we hold each year, and we provide you the opportunity to network and privately interview with 35-40 military friendly companies, like:

Siemens
Lutron
ABB
Daifuku
Ingersoll Rand
Ecolab

Orion has several upcoming Distinguished Candidate Conferences in the first quarter of 2019 throughout the country, including:

March 4 - 5, 2019 - Houston, TX
March 4 - 5, 2019 - San Diego, CA

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the podcast yet, now is the time to catch up on our most popular shows of 2018!

#10 - Careers in Field Service for Veterans

Field Service jobs are in high demand because of the variety of industries they serve. Field Service Technicians are responsible for the maintenance and repair of equipment, products and systems. This includes home-based equipment such as security systems, appliances and electronics, and larger commercial items like heavy equipment, factory machinery, computer networks and wind turbines. While the type of work is dependent on the industry, in this episode we’ll discuss what to expect if you are seeking a career as a Field Service Technician.

#9 - Unilever Provides Careers with Purpose for Veterans

Unilever makes thousands of products under more than 400 brand names used by 2.5 billion people every day. This global company is behind trusted brands like Dove, Axe, Hellman’s, Ben & Jerry’s, and many more. Unilever has a strong commitment to hiring veterans and has partnered with Orion to hire military talent into a variety of roles nationwide. Learn more at www.oriontalent.com/unilever.

Mike Stevens, a Marine Corps Veteran and Unilever Employee, joins the show to discuss his military background and career with Unilever.

#8 - Take Charge of Panel and Meal-time Interviews

Each employer has a preferred style of interviewing based on the company culture, position for which you are interviewing, and interview timeline. In this episode we will focus on two of the less traditional types of interviews: panel and meal time interviews. An Orion Recruiter joines the show to discuss pros and cons of these types of interviews, common pitfalls and keys to success.

#7 - Write a Resume That Will Get You Noticed

Preparing your resume is an important part of your military to civilian career transition. Making sure that it’s relevant and highlights your skills effectively can be challenging because your work in the military may not be easily understood by a civilian hiring manager. Your resume should serve as a snapshot of your accomplishments, education and work experience and it should tell the story of not just what you’ve done, but where you want to go. Listen to this episode to learn how to use your resume to effectively sell yourself to a potential employer.

#6 - Ask the Right Questions and Close the Interview Like a Pro

Preparing questions to ask the interviewer and closing the interview are two important aspects of a job interview that are frequently overlooked. An interview is a two-way street, and preparing thoughtful questions in advance tells the interviewer that you are interested in the job. Additionally, making sure to sell yourself when closing the interview is one of the most important things you can do to leave a lasting impression. In this episode we discuss examples of questions you should and shouldn’t ask, the importance of closing the interview, and tips for selling yourself at the close of an interview.

#5 - Everything You Need to Know About Orion Hiring Conferences

A Hiring Conference is your chance to interview with hiring managers for positions that are a match with your background, skills and preferences. Orion holds approximately 75 hiring conferences each year in cities throughout the nation, and the conference will feature positions throughout that region of the country. In this episode, we’ll discuss the differences between an Orion hiring conference and a traditional job fair, how to prepare, and what to expect from interview to offer.

#4 - Tom Wolfe, Author of “Out of Uniform”

Tom Wolfe’s “Out of Uniform: Your Guide to a Successful Military to Civilian Career Transition” was written to help all transitioning military personnel, regardless of service, branch, rank, rating, time in service, time in grade, or specialty. In this two-part episode, Tom joins the show to discuss some of the highlights from the second edition of his book, as well as advice for military job seekers.

#3 - 7 Things I Wish I Knew When I Left the Military

Transitioning out of the military can bring some unique challenges that you may not have anticipated. Things like a gap in health insurance coverage, the logistics of relocation, and potentially taking a pay cut can catch many transitioning service members by surprise. Kyu Lim, an Orion Recruiter and former Marine Corps Officer, joins the show to discuss the 7 things he wishes he had known when transitioning out of the military.

#2 - Career Opportunities for Veterans in the Oil & Gas Industry

Orion has hired more than 2,800+ veterans into the oil and gas industry into companies such as Phillips 66, Halliburton, BP, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger, and many more. Military candidates have proven to be an ideal fit for a wide range of positions including Field Service, Operators, Maintenance Technicians, Project Managers, and Engineers. In this episode we’ll discuss similarities between the military and oil and gas industry, misconceptions about the oil and gas industry and career opportunities for veterans.

Exciting Career Opportunities for Veterans with Schwan’s

Since 2017, Orion has partnered with Schwan’s to provide careers for veterans into Area Manager and Area Manager-in-Training roles. From home to stores, restaurants and more, Schwan's products are everywhere you eat. Schwan's sells quality frozen food on its traditional delivery trucks, in grocery-store freezers, and in the food-service industry. Some of Schwan's notable brands include: Freschetta and Red Baron pizzas, Edward’s and Mrs. Smith’s desserts, and many more.

Paul Worley, Army Veteran and Area Manager at Schwan’s, recently joined Orion’s “From the Battlefield to the Boardroom” podcast to discuss his military background, his unique career path after leaving the military, and what led him to a career with Schwan’s.

“After I contacted Orion and gave them my information, they asked me some great questions that made me reflect on what I really wanted to do. In the corporate business world there are warehouse jobs and sales jobs, and everything in between. After some evaluation I decided that a sales job is where I could make the most money. You get to reap the benefits of your hard work,” says Worley.

Worley joined Schwan’s as an Area Manager in Southwest, OH, conveniently located in close proximity to where he lived with his family. While the location was certainly a selling point, there were many other aspects that attracted him to Schwan’s. “During the interview process I was impressed by the culture and opportunity. I saw this opportunity as a way to basically run my own business without having to worry about the overhead cost,” says Worley. “I have the ability to lead a group of salespeople and we can be as good or as bad as we want to be. In the military you’re used to working independently with little supervision, knowing what the job is and getting it done. That’s what we do here at Schwan’s, so that was really a big selling point for me,” he explains.

Last week, Orion hosted a live #OrionChat with Schwan’s about veterans in the food and beverage industry. Tim Sweeney, Director of Strategic Programs at Orion Talent, and Brian Milne, District Sales Leader at Schwan's joined the chat to discuss opportunities for veterans at Schwan’s, benefits of working at Schwan’s, how a military background can translate into a career in this industry, and many more. “This is a company that values its employees, has a clearly defined vision and strives to be a place where people like to work,” said Milne during the chat. Read the full #OrionChat here.
