Careers for Veterans in the Building Controls Industry

Building Controls are responsible for controlling the internal environment of virtually all buildings worldwide. From office buildings to campuses and stadiums, most buildings rely on a system to regulate heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, and much more.

“The building controls industry is one that not many transitioning veterans think about, but it spreads across every building in the world in some type of way. All buildings run some type of building controls system that can control their air conditioning, key card access, life safety systems, controlled by an all encompassing system. It’s an interesting mix of electronics, information IT systems and mechanical systems,” explains Jay Koranda, Recruiting Manager at Orion. Because of the wide use of these systems across the world, this industry provides an abundance of opportunities for veterans in locations nationwide. While many of the roles are technical in nature, there are also opportunities for Junior Military Officers in Project Management, Sales and Service Management.

Veterans are a natural fit for a roles within the building controls industry because of the technical knowledge and skills gained from their time in service. Before joining Orion, Jay accepted a position with Siemens in its Building Technologies division as his first role out of the Navy. “As an Electronics Technician, my background in working with large systems, pressure sensors, transmitters, pumps, valves and all of that, I was a natural fit. I had the experience, but I never had familiarity with HVAC or building controls in general,” says Jay.

For transitioning veterans or those looking for a career change, now is a good time to join this growing industry. Jay explains, “If you look at how many buildings are being built across the U.S. today due to the economy and corporate expenditures, you can’t build enough data centers around the world to support the demand we’re going through. With that, you see a large demand for building controls packages. And the pay ranges have to be just as competitive.”

Orion has hired thousands of veterans into some of the world’s largest companies in this industry such as Siemens, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Trane, Alerton, among many others. Listen to the podcast to learn more.
