Military Family Spotlight: The Liles Family

LCDR Charles Liles with sons Collison & AJ

Nora Liles is a National Recruiter at Orion in our Virginia Beach, VA, office, specializing in assisting transitioning and former military officers in their career search. Nora, her husband, Charles, and sons Collison, 2, and AJ, 3 months old, are a Navy family. LCDR Charles Liles is an F-18 pilot who has been in the military for 14 years.  Charles is a USNA graduate who commissioned in 2002 and has previously deployed to Iraq and Africa.

One of the most difficult times in the life of a military family is when they are separated due to deployment. And it is during Military Family Month that it’s important to remember how important friends and neighbors can be, especially when extended family is far away. “I am very fortunate to have a strong network of friends here in the Hampton Roads area," explains Nora, "It was comforting to know that if I need any kind of help, my friends were only a call away.  I am also surrounded by wonderful neighbors who are always willing to help.  We have family in North Carolina, and they are a short 5-6 hour drive away."

Nora goes on to tell us that “being a military family is a great honor.  My family takes great pride of the fact that Charles goes away to serve our country. It takes a tremendous amount of strength and courage to be able to raise a family and serve our country at the same time.  Being a military spouse has taught me that with hard work, everything is possible.”

Saying thank-you is one of the simplest and often most meaningful ways to support military families and to acknowledge veterans who have selflessly served our country. “Hearing the words ‘thank you for your service’ coming from civilians always brightens my day.  It is a wonderful feeling to know that you are appreciated," says Nora, “I have been very fortunate to be a part of a team at Orion that understands what it takes to be able to care for a military family.  The appreciation, support, and recognition I receive from Orion is tremendous.”

As a military wife, Nora knows what veterans sacrifice for the freedom of our country. She explains that knowing that they are appreciated makes a big impact.  She herself returns the favor by supporting wounded warriors organizations and suggests that as a great place to start.

Thank you to Nora for sharing some insight into her life as part of a military family. Her husband’s service is commendable, as is Nora, as she holds down the home front.

Operation: Coming Home Key Ceremony - Hero Home 13

On Thursday, October 27th, Orion International and many other organizations and individuals gathered to witness the Operation: Coming Home (OCH) Key Ceremony in honor of US Marine Raider SGGT Brandan Taylor and his family.

Operation: Coming Home (OCH) is a non-profit group that provides custom built homes for wounded military service members. These homes are called “Hero Homes” and are designed to promote independence and mobilization for the injured veteran and his family. Brandon Taylor is the thirteenth recipient of an Operation: Coming Home - Hero Home, and was chosen from an outstanding group of applicants.

Brandan served in the United States Marine Corps for 10 years. In 2014, Brandan sustained multiple injuries while on a mission in Afghanistan. Taylor was on a night time helicopter raid with 30-50 of his men when he slipped on a sheet of ice, fracturing his back. His 150-pound backpack hit his head, knocking him out. Taylor completed the three remaining months of his deployment by utilizing pain pills available in the local market to avoid being sent home.

It wasn't until he returned to the US for the birth of his twins that he had an MRI, revealing a fractured spine and nerve damage. Taylor stated he had been in tremendous amounts of pain, but really didn’t want to leave his team.

OCH was inspired by Taylor’s story, and a board member of Operation: Coming Home, said his courage in his service led them to build their thirteenth home for Taylor, his wife, and three sons. OCH is led by the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County and US Veterans Corps. It partners with builder CalAtlantic Homes. Modifications in the home include wider hallways and a special shower.

Orion’s Raleigh team had the honor to spend time working on preparation of the home and attending the Key Ceremony on October 27th where Taylor and his family were presented the keys to their new home. We look forward to helping build the next Hero Home!

Preparing for a Successful Sales Career

Tim Goering, a USNA graduate and former USMC officer, found his first sales role through Orion in 1997. He now owns a successful sales training and tactics consulting business, Making Luck, Inc., where he gives advice gleaned from his nearly twenty years of sales experience.

If you have never considered sales as a post-military career option, listen to Tim Goering. He gives great insight about why your military background makes you uniquely suited for sales and what you can start doing now to prepare for future success.

  • Why and how the military has uniquely prepared for you for a career in sales
      • Sales is an exciting and very rewarding option for transitioning military leaders, but requires focused preparation to ensure you will be a competitive candidate and obtain the job.
      • The leadership experience you have gained in the military gives you a huge advantage over civilians entering sales.
      • The military is similar to sales in that it requires training and preparation, which you already value through your military experience.
  • Preparing to land the job
      • In the military, you always have a plan. You never start a job or mission without having a plan of who, what, when and where.
      • Do your research.
      • Stay calm when faced with the uncertainty of your job search. Military personnel know how to stay calm in the face of chaos, which is an unique strength when entering the sales industry.
  • How to succeed once you get there
      • Tim refers to sales professionals as either “climbers” and “campers.” Veterans are climbers: you are willing to take that risk.
      • Never quit!
      • Once you learn your product and how to sell it, you will be a machine.
      • Talk with your peers. See what they are having success with, and bounce ideas off each other. In the military you work as a team, but many civilian salesmen don’t do that.
      • After you’ve taken the risk of passing up the $75k solid salary job for a $45k plus commission sales position, remember to use your resources. If you're not hitting the mark you need to, ask why. Ask the people who are successful.
  • Common mistakes and pitfalls to avoid
      • If you have a bad attitude, you will fail in sales. You need to prepare for rejection, it is a part of life in sales.
      • Don't give up! 48% of people never follow up with a prospect. 25% never make a second contact. 2% of sales are made on the 1st contact. 80% of sales are made on the fifth through twelfth contact.
      • Don't get frustrated with the compensation plans. Remember that you have control of what you make. Go make your own bonus check! In sales there is no limit!

Visit Tim Goering’s website for more information and advice on whether a sales career is a good fit for you.
