Orion International: January 1991 - January 2016 - Celebrating 25 Years of Success
Founded by five former JMOs in 1991, Orion celebrates its silver anniversary this year. Two of our original founders, Bill Laughlin, and Randy Nelson, continue to serve on Orion’s Board of Directors today. The guiding principle of the five founders was, first and foremost, teamwork. The partners succeeded as a team due to their cooperation, sharing of ideas, and financial decisions, which benefited the group rather than the individual. The three foundations for the new venture were Clients, Candidates, and the Team. Twenty-five years after its inception, these principles and foundations have helped Orion find careers for more than 36,000 veterans.
Orion opened its doors on January 7, 1991, with headquarters in Raleigh, NC; and offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In its first year in business, Orion found careers for 95 transitioning Officers within 25 companies, including Target, Pfizer, Schering-Plough, DHL, ABB Power, Alcoa, GE Energy, and Ingersoll-Rand. Positions were primarily in Pharmaceutical Sales, Distribution, and Retail Management.
Orion’s very first placement was Jon Fulton, a USNA Graduate and five-year Navy Nuclear Officer. Fulton turned to Orion after a disappointing experience with another recruiting firm. Fulton says “After talking with my recruiter, Bill Laughlin, I felt like he knew who I was, what I was capable of doing, and had my best interests in mind as he sought to place me with the right position and company.” The company and position were certainly the right fit, as Fulton will celebrate his 25th anniversary with Alcoa in April of this year!
After three years in business, Orion became the first military recruiting firm to find careers for Enlisted Technicians and Non-Commissioned Officers. After seeing success in placing Officers, the team decided to try finding careers for NCOs, and tested the idea with several well-established clients. This proved very successful, and Orion is the undisputed leader in Enlisted Technician and NCO placement today.
In 2010, Orion again expanded our offerings to Veterans and demonstrated an industry-leading mindset by becoming the first Military Talent Firm to work with non-technical Combat Arms service members. Since then, Orion has matched nearly 2000 Combat Arms veterans with civilian careers. Orion’s 25th anniversary also marks the company’s fourth year of partnership with the White House Joining Forces Program. Highlights of this partnership include Orion alumni being asked to speak at Joining Forces events with First Lady Michelle Obama, media coverage, as well as multiple features on the White House blog.
In the last several years, Orion has pioneered several new offerings for clients. From our Military Talent Programs, to the Distinguished Candidate Conference, and Temp-to-Perm Staffing, we continue to demonstrate Innovation and Excellence at every turn by leveraging the far-reaching networks they’ve spent 25 years developing. Orion’s top clients today include industry leaders like Siemens, Whirlpool, SpaceX, Honda, Phillips 66, Honeywell, and Wrigley.
It seems fitting that Orion was named after one of the most prominent constellations in the sky. Twenty-five years after five former JMOs decided to make a difference in the military recruiting world, Orion has grown into the nation's leading Military Talent firm. As we celebrate this important anniversary, our mission at Orion holds steady:
To strengthen American Business with Best-in-Class Military Talent, through the relentless pursuit of excellence and unwavering commitment to our Nation's Military Professionals.

5 Hot Jobs for Transitioning Veterans
Have you thought about your career after transitioning out of the military? Transitioning into a civilian career can be a little intimidating, but Orion is here to help! According to G.I. Jobs Magazine data, here is a list of some of the hottest jobs for transitioning military based on projected occupation growth.
This list includes a brief job description, the average pay that civilians earn, and any education or training that is required. If you are getting out of the military soon and looking for a job, keep these top jobs in mind to help make your transition less stressful and more successful.
1. Operations Manager: Salary Range = $35,367 – $100,990 Job Description: Operations Managers run the operations for a company or organization. They work in nearly every industry, looking for ways to make operations more productive. For example, in manufacturing, Operations Managers ensure that production runs smoothly and efficiently. Why It’s Hot: Growth of 12.4 percent is projected through 2022. That translates to 244,100 jobs! What You’ll Need: Those with at least a bachelor’s degree will have the most success, although experience may trump the need for a degree. Certifications are also available in the industry.
2. Sales Representatives: Salary Range = $30,025 – $86,002
Job Description: Sales Representatives sell the products or services that their company offers. Successful sales people are some of the highest-paid professionals in the world.
Why It’s Hot: Without sales, a company does not exist. As long as companies have goods or services to sell, there will be a need for sales professionals. And those who excel can become sales managers who lead their teams. The BLS projects 132,000 jobs will be added in this field by 2022.
What You’ll Need: High school diploma; most companies will train you.
3. Mechanic: Salary Range = $27,961 – $61,941 Job Description: Simply put, Mechanics fix anything with an engine: cars, trucks, boats, trains, airplanes, buses, heavy equipment, even lawn mowers and rototillers. Sometimes they’re called technicians, but regardless of title they’ll likely use computer technology to troubleshoot, repair and maintain machines.
Why It’s Hot: Machines take us everywhere, and they eventually break down or need repairs. The BLS predicts 9 percent job growth for auto mechanics, and 15 percent growth for diesel mechanics.
What You’ll Need: If this wasn’t your job in the military, you’ll need post-secondary training from a vocational school or other institution. To be an aircraft mechanic, you’ll also need FAA certification.
4. Manufacturing Technician: Salary Range = $32,087 – $73,991 Job Description: Today’s technicians operate production equipment and often use computer technology to make products from cars to pharmaceuticals. They also may fix the high-tech equipment or assemble necessary components.
Why It’s Hot: Although growth was projected at 2 percent between 2012 and 2022, more than 228,000 manufacturing jobs have been created over the last 12 months.
What You’ll Need: Some employers require an associates degree or relevant technical degree, while others will accept military experience in lieu of a degree. A growing number of companies will train veterans for the job, recognizing they already have the intangible skills to succeed in this environment.
5. Construction Worker: Salary Range: $20,109 – $56,439 Job Description: Construction Workers help the skilled tradesmen on a construction site in a variety of ways, such as by loading and unloading materials, setting up concrete forms and ramps, and mixing and pouring materials like concrete. Construction Workers learn a valuable trade, and with an aging workforce advancement opportunities will be excellent.
Why It’s Hot: Construction has been adding an average of 28,000 workers every month over the last 12 months. The BLS predicts employment will increase 21.3 percent by 2022.
What You’ll Need: Unions like recruiting young veterans because they’re in great shape, possess good math skills and know how to work safely on a team. You can learn on the job, or use your GI Bill to learn a trade; some employers even train service members on base while still on active duty.
The jobs above hardly scratch the surface of all the career possibilities out there. Your transition doesn’t have to be a time of uncertainty or confusion. Connect with an Orion recruiter in your area that can help you in your career transition.

"My Orion recruiter was absolutely phenomenal. I attended a Hiring Conference outside of Providence, Rhode Island, and it was an informative two-day event I will surely not forget.
I am now a Service Technician for Tulimieri Associates Inc. Being that I worked with electronics on helicopters, I feel I will successfully transfer into this company where I will be servicing variable frequency drives for various industrial HVAC applications."-Seth Gillis, Service Technician
"I am currently a Business Development Manager in the Southeast region of KanPak LLC. I felt as if my recruiters' only goal was finding me a job, and I really felt they were out there helping me at all times. Orion went above and beyond on multiple occasions, and it was great knowing that I had Orion in my corner fighting for me." -Donald Noah, Business Development Manager
"My military career as an Air Force Maintenance Technician has set me up for lots of life’s opportunities and Orion worked very hard to meet my new employment needs.
